Veterans Day: Honoring the Legacy of Service
Today, students, staff members and families across Kearney School District are honoring those who have served in the United States Armed Forces in recognition of Veterans Day. At Kearney Junior High, the day began with a special breakfast for dozens of veterans and their families in the school library. That was followed by an all-school assembly that featured a Boy Scouts flag ceremony, the choir singing the National Anthem and words of gratitude from students. Kearney Middle School social studies teacher and Kearney High School Boys Wrestling Head Coach Tyler Owen talked about his service with the U.S. Army, which included deployment to Afghanistan to support a hospital unit. Seargant Owen encouraged the students to pursue the ideals exemplified by the military, especially selfless service for others.
Hawthorne Elementary also held an all-school assembly, with the school choir singing patriotic songs interspersed with students describing why it's important to honor veterans, many of whom were on hand for the event. The veterans and their families then enjoyed a breakfast in the Hawthorne lunchroom.
Please join all Bulldogs in expressing our gratitude and respect for the men and women who have stepped up to protect our nation.
