In the event of inclement weather, the school district may determine that one of the following actions should be taken for the safety of students and staff.
Implementing AMI Day
AMI – This year the Kearney School District will not be required to make up days in which school buildings are closed due to sudden, unexpected short-term closures such as utility outages or inclement weather. A new plan from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education allows the district to continue student learning on these days by implementing an Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) plan. By utilizing the AMI plan for up to 6 days, the last day of school will remain May 26th. If we exceed 6 weather days, the district will utilize make-up days.
Please refer to this previously communicated message regarding AMI instruction.
Implementing NO School Day
No School Day – In the event of extreme weather conditions, the superintendent could determine that KSD will not hold virtual school, and KSD will close for the timeframe determined necessary. In this case, the day will be made up later in the year.
Implementing 2 Hour Late Start
When the district determines it is necessary to utilize a two-hour late start to a school day here are some tips to help you navigate the change in schedule.
Why a Late Start Instead of Cancelling School?
Oftentimes the roads just need a few hours of sunshine and warmer temperatures to become safer for students to travel to school.
Schedule Changes
With a two-hour late start all schedules are pushed to two hours later including:
- Bus Route Pick Up (Example: If the bus normally picks up students at 6:35 AM, it will now arrive at 8:35 AM)
- Doors Open at School Buildings (Example: Doors normally open at 7:00 AM. Doors will now open at 9:00 AM)
- Early Childhood Preschool (Mrs. Dillon’s class) and Puppy Pound (KSD employee childcare) will start 2 hours later (Example: If normal bus picks up student at 7:45 AM, the bus will now arrive at 9:45 AM).
Kids Club will be open at 7:00 AM for those families who are already signed up.
Please note that Early Childhood’s Acorn Patch classes are cancelled on late start days.
Before School Clubs & Activities
When the district has a two-hour late start, all before school clubs and activities are cancelled. This is for student and family safety so they are not traveling on unsafe roads or battling winter conditions.
Meals
A light breakfast will be available at all school buildings. Lunches are served on the same schedule as a normal school day.
Important Notes
It is also important to know that on a late start day we dismiss at the same time as a regular day.
- Early Childhood Preschool – 3:30 PM
- Elementary – 3:30 PM
- Secondary – KMS, KJH and KHS – 2:20 PM
We know that a change in the school day can cause some disruption for families. The decision to make a schedule change is done with the safety of students in mind. We appreciate the support from the community as we all work together to navigate the ever-changing Missouri weather!
